In the fall of 2011, Dr. Dan Pryor led a very important discussion of Servant Leadership at First Baptist Church Austin. We are happy to announce that this very popular discussion will continue. Please join us on Saturday January 21st from 10 am to 4 pm at Still Waters Retreat Center, 9409 Granada Hills Drive Austin. Attendance at the previous discussion is not a prerequisite. All are welcome! Topics will include gifts, calling, leading from the inside out, listening beyond the words, stewardship & trust, and building community.
Dan is Adjunct Professor of the Organizational Communications Program at St. Edward’s University in Austin. He is a recognized teacher whose interactive teaching style will lead to lively discussions and great fellowship.
Lunch will be provided. As Dr. Pryor is offering this workshop as a gift to the community, there is no registration fee. Donations will be accepted to defray the cost of materials and food. We hope you will join us.

The Active Life by Parker Palmer
An experiential book study
Led by Tommy Chiodo
February 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th
10 AM to Noon
The Quaker Parker Palmer is perhaps best known for his writings regarding the significance of exploring and knowing “true self”, including Let Your Life Speak and Hidden Wholeness. The Active Life is an earlier exploration of the paradoxical dynamic of our inner lives versus our outer lives. Dr. Palmer observes that modern society regards the outer life, “the world of action”, as “an arena of ego and power” while the inner life, “the world of contemplation” is regarded as “the realm of light and grace” and that in Western society “the treasure of ‘true self’ can (only) be found as we draw back from active life and enter into contemplative prayer.” But, based on his own flawed experiment with living a monastic life, he found that there is as much to be learned about life and about ourselves in the active life as there is in contemplative life.“My aim in this book is to celebrate and criticize the active life, to explore its joys and pains, its problems and potentials, to understand the forces that both drive and deform our activity – but to do all this with the reverence for the mystery of self-discovery and creation which is at the heart of human action.” In this book study we will examine the stories and poems from the various spiritual traditions: Chinese Taoism, early biblical culture, Hasidic Judaism, and Contemporary Latin America) Parker Palmer uses to explore the virtues and struggles of living an active life.
This exploration will be done in the context of a set of principles and practices later developed by Parker, and will be facilitated by Tommy Chiodo who has been involved in “Courage work” for over five years and is a trained facilitator of the work.
For additional information regarding the workshop, contact Tommy Chiodo at 512-327-1282 – home, 512-914-5096 – cell, or tommy@chiodo.org to reserve your spot, please call the church office at 476-2625 or email: stillwaters@fbcaustin.org.
